The 81st Golden Globe Awards launched the 2024 awards season, celebrating the successes of big hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer in cinemas and the impactful finales of shows like Succession, Ted Lasso, and The Crown on TV. Top Hollywood stars strolled down the red carpet on Sunday evening, gathering at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., for an event that highlighted the best of movies and TV from 2023.
Curious about the 2024 golden globe awards. Here’s all you need to know.
The ceremony is scheduled for January 7 and will be broadcast live on CBS, the new network for the awards. It will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ and the CBS app. The Globes used to air on NBC for a long time until their partnership ended in 2023.
Golden Globe Awards 2024 Time
The three-hour show began at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on January 7, airing live on CBS and streaming globally on Paramount+.
Golden Globes Award 2024 Host
Jo Koy, a stand-up comedian and actor, made his hosting debut for the show. Known for his live comedy, appearances on late-night programs, hosting comedy specials like Jo Koy: In His Elements on Netflix in 2020, and starring in the comedy film Easter Sunday in 2022, Koy stepped into the hosting role.
It is reported that Koy was asked to host just two weeks before the Golden Globes Awards 2024. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Koy mentioned binge-watching the nominated movies and shows to get ready.
As a Filipino American, born Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr., Koy shared with the Associated Press that watching the Golden Globes while growing up was a big part of his life. He expressed a desire to inspire the Asian community and make a positive impact through his hosting.
The event featured an array of well-known presenters, including America Ferrera from Barbie, Florence Pugh from Oppenheimer, Issa Rae, and Oprah Winfrey, producer of The Color Purple.
Golden Globe Awards 2024 Nominations
This year’s show has seen some significant changes. Now, each category has six nominees instead of the usual five. The Golden Globes have introduced two new awards: one for box office successes like John Wick: Chapter 4, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and another celebrating stand-up comedy performances by talents like Amy Schumer, Trevor Noah, and former Globes host Ricky Gervais.
About 300 journalists vote for the Globes, but their choices don’t always match up with the Oscars. Last year, the Globes honored The Fabelmans and “The Banshees of Inisherin, while the Oscars picked Everything Everywhere All at Once for best picture. The nominations for the top awards were announced by Cedric The Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama.
Once seen as a crucial part of Hollywood’s awards season, the Globes were famous for their lively, sometimes tipsy, gatherings where A-listers let loose (thanks in part to lots of champagne). It was one of the few shows where winners like Christine Lahti and Renée Zellweger were fashionably late due to a quick bathroom break.
But the good times came to an end due to concerns about diversity and ethical issues within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization behind the awards. This led to boycotts, and NBC decided not to air the 2022 show (although it returned last year). Since then, the Globes have been working to diversify their members, tighten guidelines, and restructure as a for-profit entity after the HFPA was dissolved, with its assets sold to Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge. Dick Clark Productions was later acquired by Variety’s parent company, Penske Media, in collaboration with Eldridge.
